Profile
A masterpiece of the legendary architect Mimar Sinan, this imperial mosque dominates the city’s third hill, offering a sublime blend of Ottoman grandeur, acoustic perfection, and breathtaking views over the Golden Horn.
Explore the sprawling complex of the Süleymaniye Mosque, commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent at the height of the Ottoman Empire’s power. More than just a place of worship, this 16th-century site was designed as a “külliye”—a social hub—that included a hospital, library, and soup kitchen. Its architecture is celebrated for its elegant simplicity and the innovative engineering that has allowed it to withstand centuries of earthquakes without a single crack.
Inside, you will find a vast, airy space illuminated by hundreds of windows, featuring subtle yet masterful decorations and an advanced acoustic system designed by Sinan himself. The exterior courtyard is equally impressive, leading to the serene garden that houses the mausoleums of Sultan Suleiman and his wife, Hürrem Sultan. After touring the interior, make sure to walk to the mosque’s outer terrace for one of the most iconic panoramic views of Istanbul, stretching from the Galata Tower to the Bosphorus bridges.
The Süleymaniye Mosque remains the soul of the city, offering a peaceful and deeply historical atmosphere that perfectly captures the golden age of Ottoman artistry.
